James Max "Jim" McCarter, 83, of Greencastle, surrounded by his family, entered Heaven's gates and into our Mother's arms on May 18, 2017.

He was born on November 15, 1933 to Clinton and Lillian (Osborn) McCarter in Martin County, Indiana. He graduated in 1952 from Elnora High School, Elnora, IN.

Dad married Mahala Jane Truelove on March 9th, 1956 and left a week later to serve his country in the United States Navy.

Jim and Jane moved to Greencastle on July 4th, 1960 with two small children and built a wonderful life together. Our fondest memories are of our family of four packing up the camper every summer and heading west.

Dad retired from Public Service Indiana (Duke) after 36 years.

He attended New Life Baptist Church.

Dad is preceded in death by our Mother, his parents, and an infant daughter.

He will be greatly missed by his children, Jody and Mark Cowger and Jeff and Darlena McCarter. He was "grandad" to Jamie Cowger, Jeremy Cowger, and Eric and Tracy Wheeler. He was blessed with the arrivals of his great grandchildren, Jordan Mahala O'Neal, Kayden Parker Wheeler, Gabe Christian Boudreau and Cruz Alan Cowger. He leaves behind two sisters, Maryann Smith and Linda (Tom) Bloom and several beloved nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at the Forest Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 23rd from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home.
